Zirconium dioxide is found in nature as a mineral called baddeleyite. Due to the technical requirements of the material, however, zirconium dioxide for ceramic use is gained from zircon sand, purified, prepared and stabilized with Y2O3. This yields a material with outstanding characteristics.

As a partially stabilized material, zirconium dioxide is distinguished by the following characteristics:

• high resistance to fracture
• thermal expansion similar to that of stainless steel
• the highest compressive, flexural and tensile strength
• high wear resistance
• high corrosion resistance
• very good tribological characteristics
• substrate grain size of approx. 1 µm

Durch eine prozessbedingte sehr glatte Oberfläche des Materials erübrigt sich teilweise der Einsatz von zusätzlichem Läppen oder Polieren.
