The term "special ceramics" or "technical ceramics" refers to all ceramic materials that are mainly used as components, that fulfill mechanical functions or whose specific characteristics perform an active task, such as ion or heat conductivity.
They are used in mechanical engineering, chemical process engineering, electronics, sensor technology (lambda sensors), fuel cells and biotechnology.
The reason for using technical ceramics is an interaction of the following characteristics:
- outstanding high-temperature and corrosion resistance
- great strength at high temperatures
- high rigidity
- low density (low inertial mass)
- good abrasion resistance to a variety of media
Four important types of technical ceramics:
- aluminium oxide (Al2O3)
- zirconium oxide (ZrO2)
- silicon carbide (e.g., RSiC)
- silicon nitride

The conventional materials are oxides, nitrides and carbides. Oxides are the least rigid, followed by nitrides and finally carbides, which are the hardest.
Based on tape technology, the special ceramics department produces this type of material in sintered form (substrate) or, upon customer request, semi-finished products referred to as "foil" or "tape".
